Overview
The Real Bali program is exactly how it sounds; it’s an opportunity to get beyond the tourist traps and take a deeper look at both traditional and modern elements of Balinese culture.
The Real Bali program is based in Ubud, from where we will connect with some of Bali’s most famous artists.
Participants will take part in a spectacular wayang kulit performance with Made Sidia, arguably the most famous “dalang” (shadow puppet master) in the world. Our wayang kulit workshop takes you backstage to create, produce and perform your very own stories.
After learning how to dress in traditional ceremonial clothes we will make “chanang” (traditional Balinese offerings) and visit Tirta Empul and cleanse ourselves ...in the ancient temple waters.
The piece-de-resistance in the Real Bali program is Mepantigan, which blends Balinese martial and performing arts in a wildly exciting activity in a muddy rice paddy! This is in no way a “traditional” activity, and yet we feel it speaks volumes about the creative spirit of the Balinese. We will dance and kick and scream and get well outside of our comfort zones. Come throw yourself (and your peers) in the mud and discover your warrior spirit!
This trip is for students who want to play. It’s both bold and humble. It’s somewhere you may have been before and also a whole new world!
